Over the next two months, we get into a routine. Our schedules are different, but we manage to overlap for breakfast and, most nights, for dinner too. We talk about ourselves a lot, which is something we need to do. We have to know each other well enough to be able to convince someone that we’re actually married, and it seems like, somehow, we are on the right track for that.

Last night, I took her to the famous Rainbow Room for dinner. After taking the obligatory photos together in front of the magnificent New York City views, we enjoyed our night. She talked more about her family. I told her about Kosovo. I wanted to tell her about the war, but I felt badly about bringing that shit into such a nice conversation.

Surprisingly, she’s really funny. And smart. And completely laser-focused on her cello and schoolwork. The most surprising thing about her is that she cooks a lot. For a woman who is as tough as she is, I didn’t expect her to be so good in the kitchen. Of course, she doesn’t make fresh bread like Daisy did for her family. But she makes us eggs every morning and lots of salads and grilled fish for dinner. I scratch the back of my neck. She might even be better than fresh bread.

Her words from our night at Apotheke, about feelings being bullshit, keep rolling in my head. It made me think more on Daisy and what we had. We had a secret romance, which kept things very hot all the time. We had sex, and to me, a young kid, it was the greatest feeling I had ever known. We talked but mostly about what could be. I wouldn’t say we shared more than that.

I’m a man now, in the shqipe. All of this, Daisy has no idea about. What I felt about her was strong, but I was a child. I had no idea about what life would bring me. The fact that she turned out to be a gold digger? It was shocking, but maybe it’s not. We never had a chance to be real together, out in the open.

When everything is a secret, it’s always charged. Not that I don’t still despise her for what she did to me. Young or old, deception and lies are not tolerable.
